If that feels like a failure of self-control, it isn't.

This is called a variable-ratio schedule, and your phone is the most sophisticated one ever built.
Pull to refresh: maybe something new, maybe nothing.
Open the app: maybe a like, maybe a message, maybe silence.
You never know which check pays off, so every check carries a flicker of "maybe this time."
That flicker is the whole trap.
It's the anticipation, not the reward
Here's the part that surprises people.
The pleasure isn't mainly in the like or the message when it arrives.
It's in the wait, the moment just before you know.
Dopamine, the brain chemical everyone blames, isn't really a "pleasure" signal; it spikes in anticipation of an uncertain reward.
Unpredictability is the fuel.
A feed that always gave you exactly what you wanted would be boring.
A feed that might is magnetic.
Which is why "just have more willpower" is such bad advice.
You're not weak.
You're up against a system engineered deliberately, by teams of very smart people, to exploit a reflex that predates the internet by millions of years.
Asking your willpower to win that fight, forty times a day, forever, is asking it to do something it was never built to do.
Why the fix has to be structural
If the problem is a machine in your pocket, the durable solution isn't to resist the machine harder.
It's to put something between you and the lever.
A slot machine works because you can pull again immediately; the "maybe this time" reflex needs a target that always answers.
Take that away, make the next pull cost a wait or give this visit an end you can see, and the reflex fires into nothing.
Same content, same you, but the loop no longer closes.
You don't need to delete anything or white-knuckle your way through the day.
You need the lever to stop being there every single time you reach for it, so that reaching becomes a decision again instead of a twitch.
